‘They are comfortably tight but not uptight, and there’s not a duff soloist among them. ‘They play irreverent, humorous and with an open view … sometimes beautiful and sometimes deadpan’ (de Volkskrant). ‘It’s not a big band, it’s not a brass band, it’s a gang’ (Toots Thielemans). His Flat Earth Society has previously collaborated with, among others, Uri Caine, Toots Thielemans, Jimi Tenor, Ernst Reijseger and Mauro Pawlowski. ‘This is truly the one record we have been working on for a long time and it really sounds super’, says the band leader, who has earned his place in music history as composer for, among others, Arditti Quartet and Prima La Musica and for theatre and dance productions by, among others, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Wim Vandekeybus, but also as a band member of X-Legged Sally and producer of dEUS and Raymond van het Groenewoud. ‘With Untitled #0, Flat Earth Society has once again managed to create an encyclopedia of hidden traps, misleading swindle, and borderline (musical) behavior, and present it all with a broad smirk’, according to the group itself. The album was mixed and mastered by Oz Fritz, known for his work with Tom Waits, Bill Laswell, John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, Iggy Pop, Bob Marley and many others. The double album UNTITLED#0 reveals a new part of the ever expanding universe of the band led by composer and reeds player P eter Vermeersch. The Flemish ensemble operates in the tradition of singular composers such as Charles Mingus, Sun Ra and Frank Zappa: futuristic, eccentric, slightly unpredictable and very disciplined at the same time. Flat Earth Society is a big band like no other.
